Yung Lean, born Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad in 1986, was an American rapper and producer who gained a devoted cult following in the 2000s for his melancholic, genre-blending sound. Hailing from the Northeastern United States, Lean emerged from the underground hip hop scene with a style that fused elements of emo, synthpop, and experimental electronica.
Lean was born in Staten Island, New York to an American mother and Swedish father. His parents divorced when he was young, and he spent much of his childhood moving between New York, Boston, and Stockholm. This peripatetic upbringing exposed him to diverse musical influences from an early age.
