Thomas Forbes was an English Romantic poet who lived from 1805 to 1842. Despite leaving behind a small but acclaimed body of poetic work, Forbes remains one of the more obscure figures of the Romantic era, his name and writings largely forgotten by later generations.
Born in the village of Oakley, Bedfordshire, Forbes spent the majority of his life in the rural countryside of central England. The son of an agricultural laborer, he worked a series of manual jobs as a youth before devoting himself full-time to writing poetry in his mid-20s.
Forbes' verse drew heavily on his intimate knowledge of the natural world and the daily lives of the rural working class.
