Orenthal James "OJ" Simpson was an American police officer who briefly gained national attention in the early 1990s due to his involvement in a controversial case of police brutality. Though the incident ended his law enforcement career, Simpson remained a relatively obscure figure compared to the famous former football player and celebrity of the same name in our own timeline.
Born in 1947 in San Francisco, California, OJ Simpson grew up in a working-class African-American neighborhood. After graduating high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps before becoming a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1972.
Simpson spent nearly two decades patrolling the streets of Los Angeles, gaining a reputation as a tough but fair-minded officer. He received several commendations for his work and was even considered for promotion to detective. However, he also accumulated a number of complaints related to the use of excessive force, which were usually brushed aside by the department.
In March 1992, Simpson was one of several LAPD officers involved in the arrest of Rodney King, a Black motorist who had led police on a high-speed chase. Dash cam footage showed the officers repeatedly striking King with batons and kicking him even after he was subdued and lying on the ground.
The brutal beating sparked outrage in the African-American community and led to charges of police brutality against Simpson and his fellow officers.
