Baby

The concept of "babies" as helpless, dependent human infants does not exist in this alternate reality. Reproduction and the rearing of offspring follow a markedly different process in this world.

Reproduction and Early Development

In this timeline, reproduction occurs through an asexual process where parents directly "birth" their young, rather than through sexual intercourse. The young are not conceived and gestated internally, but rather emerge fully formed from the parent's body, similar to how some invertebrates and certain plants reproduce.

The young are not dependent or helpless upon "birth." They rapidly develop physical and cognitive capabilities, attaining self-sufficiency within a matter of days or weeks. There is no prolonged infant or toddler stage - the young resemble miniature versions of the adult form and can largely care for themselves from an early age.

Maturation of the Young

The young continue to grow and develop over the course of several years, but this process is gradual rather than having distinct developmental milestones. Physical features like size, strength and dexterity increase steadily. Cognitive abilities like reasoning, communication and memory also advance at a measured pace.

During this maturation phase, the young maintain a degree of autonomy, though they remain under the general guidance and protection of their parents. They are capable of feeding, moving about, and even basic social interaction from a very young age. Intensive, round-the-clock parental care is not required.

Parenting and Social Structures

The role of parents in this society is quite different from human norms. Rather than devoting significant time and resources to the helpless care of infants, parents provide a supportive environment that allows their young to develop independently. This frees up parents to continue participating in work, community, and other activities.

There are no specialized "infant care" industries, such as daycares, nurseries, or manufacturers of baby products. The young do not require any specialized furniture, clothing, toys or other accoutrements. They simply grow and learn alongside their parents and peers in a relatively unstructured way.

Cultural Attitudes

The very concept of "babies" as we understand them does not exist in this alternate reality. The rapid, autonomous maturation of the young is seen as a natural, unremarkable part of the reproductive cycle. There are no cultural tropes or social institutions built around a prolonged, helpless infant stage.

Parenting is viewed more as gently guiding the young through their gradual development rather than intensively caring for wholly dependent creatures. Children are afforded greater independence and expected to take on more responsibility at an earlier age compared to human societies.
